Baseball

Southgate offers both summer and fall Youth Baseball in conjunction with Southgate Little League.  Summer Youth Baseball is registered and set up by Little League.  Fall Youth Baseball is registered by the Recreation Department and set up by Little League.

 

Age of players is as follows; must turn 5 and cannot turn 17 by December 31st of that year.

            BASKETBALL BUDDIES CAMP

This program will assist participants to develop and improve the skills of basketball.  The program will include drills for working on skill development in dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive skills. Emphasis will also include playing small sided games and full 5 on 5 scrimmages.  Camp held at Gerish Middle School

 

Age of players is as follows; Must be 8 and under 13 by June 30th

 

Summer 2012 Basketball Buddies Camp:

Southgate partners with Christine Sickle of Sickle’s Dance Gallery to bring the popular program.  They have been offering dance instruction for 40 years.  Director, Christine Sickle, is accredited through Dance Masters of Michigan/America, Cecchetti Council of America (Ballet), and is a certified examiner of teachers through Dance Masters of America.  She has trained numerous students and instructors in the art of dance. 

 

Pre-School through teen dance classes will be held at the Southgate Civic Center.  Classes meet once a week each Wednesday from September 28th through the middle of May with a dance recital culminating the season.

Dance Class Schedule & Descriptions

 

Pre-School Ballet:  This course is the basic introduction to the art of ballet for 3-4 year olds.  Students will learn basic technique of plie, tendus, retire, saute’ jumps, arm movements, skips and turns.

    • Ages 3-4
    • 5:30-6:00 pm each Wednesday in Banquet Room (1st Floor)

 

Pre-School Gymnastics:  This course is the basic introduction to tumbling for 3-4 year olds.  Students will learn stretching and coordination exercises, forward rolls and cartwheels.

·         5:00-5:30 pm each Wednesday in Loft (2nd Floor) starting

 

Beginner Ballet:  Students will learn the classical ballet technique.  Students will learn barre exercises, center work and turns across the floor.  Ballet is the basis and foundation for all dance disciplines to develop grace, poise, coordination and flexibility. 

·         Ages 5-8

·         7:00-7:30 pm each Wednesday in Banquet Room (1st Floor)

 

Intermediate Ballet:  This course is the intermediate instruction for classical ballet technique for students who have completed the beginner course. Students will work on developing their ballet technique and mastering higher level ballet combinations. 

·         Ages 6-9

·         7:30-8:00 pm each Wednesday in Banquet Room (1st Floor)

 

Advanced Ballet:  This course is the advanced instruction for classical ballet technique for students who have completed the intermediate course. Students will work on developing their ballet technique and mastering higher level ballet combinations. 

    • Ages 8 & up
    • 8:00-8:30 pm each Wednesday in Banquet Room (1st Floor)

 

Beginner Tap:  Students will learn the “Happy Feet” tap technique of shuffles, flaps and ball change and put them into combination steps.  Students will develop rhythm and coordination, while moving their feet to the percussive sounds of the music.

·         Ages 5-8

·         6:30-7:00 pm each Wednesday in Loft (2nd Floor) starting

 

Intermediate Tap:  This course is the intermediate instruction for tap technique for students who have completed the beginner course.  Students will work on intermediate level rhythm exercises and combinations. 

·         Ages 6-9

·         6:00-6:30 pm each Wednesday in Loft (2nd Floor) starting

 

Advanced Tap:  This course is the advanced instruction for tap technique for students who have completed the intermediate course.  Students will work on more advanced rhythm exercises and combinations. 

·         Ages 8 & up

·         7:30-8:00 pm each Wednesday in Loft (2nd Floor) starting

 

Beginner Hip Hop:  Students will learn the basic instruction for hip-hop technique of stretching, performing isolation moves, exercises across the floor and learn dance combinations.  Dancers will also learn popular Hip Hop and Dance Video Moves.

    • Ages 5-8
    • 5:00-5:30 pm each Wednesday in Banquet Room (1st Floor)

 

    • Ages 9 & up
    • 8:00-8:30 pm each Wednesday in Loft (2nd Floor) starting

 

Intermediate Hip Hop:  This course is the intermediate instruction for students who have completed the beginner hip hop course.  Dancers will learn more difficult isolations and dance combinations as seen in Hip Hop and Dance Video routines.

Advanced Hip Hop:  This course is the advanced instruction for students who have completed the intermediate hip hop course.  Dancers will learn advanced isolations and dance combinations as seen in Hip Hop and Dance Video routines.

Advanced Gymnastics:  For students who have completed the Intermediate Gymnastics course.  More advanced tumbling and gymnastic skills will be developed as students work towards more advanced stunts.  For students who can perform front limbers.

Southgate arena hosts 2 separate hockey associations; the Southgate Senators Youth Association and the Woodhaven Hockey Association.  Both associations host teams at the Mini-Mite, Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget levels.

Southgate offers year round ice skating classes such as Learn to Skate, Learn to Play, Tots, Parent/Tot, Special Skater, ISI Freestyle, Dance, ISI Rotation, ISI Jumps & Spins, ISI Team Compulsory, and ISI Synchronized Skating. 

 

Age of skaters is as follows; All classes (except Parent/Tot Class) must be at least 3 years of age and no more than 18 years of age by the first class.  Also, all tots in individual Tot Class must be 3 years of age and potty trained.  Parent/Tot Class must be at least 2 years of age by the first class.

Southgate also hosts two separate figure skating clubs; the ISI Southgate Figure Skating Booster Club and the USFS South Metro Shores Skating Club.  Both clubs are considered “member” associations with the benefit of paying a lower freestyle ice fee for freestyle sessions.  For more information on skate clubs contact the Recreation Department.

 

 

In-Line Hockey   (back to top)

Southgate Recreation hosts an Adult In-Line League in the summer.  Players form their own teams and register for season as a team.  Teams need a minimum of 5 players (one of which is a goalie), no team maximum. 

 

Age of players is as follows; All players MUST be 16 years of age by the first game of season.

 

Games are played at the Southgate In-Line Arena at Homer Howard Park on Sunday evenings.  Minimum of 10 games per season. 

 

Summer 2012 Season:

·         Registration Deadline:  May 25, 2012

·         1st Games Played:  Sunday June 10, 2012

 

Jr. Golf   (back to top)

Southgate Jr Golf offers Junior Golf League featuring weekly 9 hole events and skill contests.  Golfers are flited by their ability.  Before the league begins child must establish a handicap.  If they played in the league the previous year, last year’s handicap will be used.  Players new to the league are required to turn in a Southgate Golf Course 9 Hole scorecard to qualify. 

 

Registration at Golf Course ONLY at this time.

 

Age of player is as follows; ages 8 – 16 welcome

 

Dress Code:

All players are required to wear red shirts and black slacks or shorts.  Soft spikes or tennis shoes, no metal spikes allowed.

 

Summer 2012:

·         Tee Times are based on flites and range from 7:30am to 10:00am on Friday mornings

 

Karate   (back to top)

This intro program is designed to teach the new students the basic principles of Korean Karate.  Although this is only a beginner class, you will learn kicks, blocks, counter-attacks and self defense against an attacker regardless of his size.  No uniform required.  Classes held at the Tang Soo Do College located at 3547 Fort St. in Wyandotte.

 

Age of players is as follows; all students must be 5 or over

 

Fall 2011 Session:

Safety Town   (back to top)

2-week long camp of activities where children are encouraged to learn safe living habits about traffic and fire safety, safety in the home, on the school bus, the playground and around strangers. Children entering kindergarten in the fall are eligible to attend Southgate’s Safety Town. Activities include poster building, story-time and interaction with police and fire officials and more.  A small village is set for introduction to traffic safety.  Classes held at Southgate Civic Center in Arena B.

 

Age of child is as follows; Program open to all kids entering Kindergarten in fall of that year.

Southgate offers a co-ed recreational youth soccer program in both summer and fall.  Games are played at Davidson Middle School.  Shin guards are required.

Tai Chi   (back to top)

This activity emphasizes relaxation and inner calm rather than focusing on strength. The practice of Tai Chi can improve balance, enhance respiratory and immune function and promote emotional well-being.  It is a moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise. We offer sessions for seniors ranging from Beginner to Advanced. Classes are held on Monday mornings at the Civic Center.

Southgate offers tennis classes at both Beginners & Advanced levels.  Courts are located at Homer Howard Park behind Civic Center.

All classes meet twice a week for six weeks starting the Monday after school lets out.  Registration deadline June 11, 2012

Zumba   (back to top)

Zumba combines Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout system involving dance and aerobic elements. Unlike a typical dance class where counts are used, Zumba involves following the music with repetitive movements. Zumba's choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included.  Classes held at the Southgate Civic Center.
